[Geoserver-users] GeoWebCache "Could not find layer WS:Layer" when grouped layer

Windows Server 2012 R2 x64, PostgreSQL 9.5, PostGIS 2.2.1, JRE 1.8.66, Tomcat
8.0.29, GeoServer 2.8.1.

I have setup and styled all my layers in GeoServer including one grouped
layer.

I have 1 workspace set as the default workspace, 1 JNDI store in this
workspace, 12 layers in this workspace and store, 12 styles (1 for each
layer) in this workspace. 7 of these layers are grouped to make a "Base"
layer and the other 5 are used as overlay layers. The Base layer and 5
overlays are configured as "Tile Layers"

Using the WMS endpoint (..../geoserver/wms/...) I can view tiles from all 6
published layers.

Using the GeoWebCache endpoint (.../geoserver/gwc/service/wms/...) I can
view tiles from the 5 single layer overlays. Calling the Base layer through
GWC gives the error:
*org.geotools.ows.ServiceException: Could not find layer WS:Base*

What is causing this? How do I work around the issue?

A lot of fiddling and no success. However, I am able to seed the grouped
layer and the tiles are being cached. The problem is viewing them through
the GWC end point... I still need a solution.

I think there are known issues with trying to put groups in workspaces, try searching the mailing list for discussion.

Thank you Ian

I came across this post that indicates the workspace/group issue was
resolved in GeoServer 2.7:
http://sourceforge.net/p/geoserver/mailman/message/33522228/
I did try the suggestion of adding a filter - no luck.

I have also tried removing the workspace from all constiuent layers and
styles and the grouped layer itself. Can't define a store without a
workspace. Still no luck.

Going to experiment with setting up some test layers from scratch, but still
hoping some clever, advanced GeoServer user will answer with a solution.

Problem solved: On the GeoServer web administration interface "Tile Caching"

"Caching Defaults", "Enable Data Security" was ticked. Simply un-ticking

this option makes the grouped layer work.

Oh, that's interesting? Do you have any data access restrictions setup in
your server?

Cheers

No data access restrictions and the only issue was accessing a grouped layer
via GeoWebCache.

Interesting... if you can reproduce the same problem with a vanilla
installation
(so that the developer trying to fix the problem can easily reproduce on
his machine)
it would be worth opening a ticket here:
