[Geoserver-users] GeoWebCache not populating

Hi,

I am currently having difficulties getting gwc to work using GeoServer 1.71.

I can enter the gwc demo page, but when I click on any of the layers, the
browser does not display them. The respective folders in the gwc directory
was not populated with the tiles either. The seeding however, does work
correctly.

Have also tried to call the /gwc/service/wms? using ArcGIS and ILOG JViews
map building. The up show up in the applications, but the gwc folders are
not populated.

Cheers, any help would be appreciated.

Hi:

Maybe my tutorial can help you? It should work for 1.7.1 too.

Hi Mark,

I've read your guide and I can do step 1. By entering http://localhost:8080/geoserver/gwc/demo, the respectively layer folders are generated. I also can seed with no problem. To my knowledge, by accessing the the maps using a WMS through geoserver/gwc/service/wms?, the tiles will be autopopulated into the cache? That is to say, I do not need to seed, prior to accessing the tiles, the tiles should be cached upon access. But this does not happen.

Cheers

Hi Hsao:

From what I recall, I had the exact same problem until I implemented the geowebcache.xml. Did you do this? I was able to make request strings direct to GeoServer before I created a geowebcache.xml, but could not create the tiles on the fly. And, yes, you should not have to seed in advance. It's only important to seed in advance, if you want to do some full range testing, otherwise, just let your users populate the tiles. Hope that helps some.

Hi Mark,

I copied the geowebcache.xml from your guide and put it into my gwc directory. However, this did not seem to solve the problem. I still couldn't view sf:roads in this case from the geowebcache demo, and my sf_roads directory is not filled with any tiles. The xml file seem to be read though, as the demo only allowed the 4326 SRS.

Thanks for the help so far.

Can you give me the URL to a demo application, as it shows up in your browser address bar ? (Without geowebcache.xml present, though it should technically not matter unless you override a layer definition.)

Have you checked the logfiles? geoserver.log in <GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR>/logs . If you run Tomcat you can also check catalina.out, and if it's the standalone version you can keep an eye on the console window.

What does show up on your screen ? If it's broken tiles, right click on one and choose "View image"

Arne:

I re-read Hsao's post, and think Hsao is trying to use GeoWebCache in ArcGIS, and I don't believe you can use the GeoWebCache tiling engine in ArcGIS, just straight WMS. Maybe I am not correct with that? Yes, the geowebcache.xml doesn't really matter unless you want more control. Hsao may try and drop a test link in Google Earth such as:
http://localhost:8080/geoserver/gwc/service/kml/sf:roads.png.kml?
It may be functioning just fine, and be a client software issue. I would also recommend checking the logs.

Arne:

Thanks for the reply, I kind of sorted out the earlier problem. We were working on a standalone PC and I didn't notice that the call for OpenLayers would require a internet connection.

Now that is out of the way, we are actually look to use GeoWebCache as a middle layer for ArcGIS or ILOG JViews. According to Mark, this does not seem doable, for ArcGIS at least. Any clarification on that?

I think Mark is right, at least I've heard it elsewhere too, that ArcGIS cannot do tiled requests. That makes it a bad fit for use with a tile cache. It's doable to recombine tiles to serve regular WMS clients, but there's currently no timeline for it. (Either way, the performance will not be as good as when serving static tiles).

I don't know anything about ILOG JViews, so I can't really comment on that. Please do let me know what you find out though.
