[Geoserver-users] Get legend from SLD with multiple user styles

Hi list,

I have a layer.sld with 2 user styles (layer and layerLegend). I want to create a legend of the layerLegend user style. But when using the following request, I get a runtime exception: java.lang.NullPointerException: request.getStyle()

wms?request=GetLegendGraphic&version=1.0.0&format=image/png&strict=false&style=layerLegend&width=20&height=20

When I copy the layer.sld to the www/styles directory in the data directory and I add the SLD-parameter to the previous request, the expected legend graphic is created successfully.

wms?request=GetLegendGraphic&version=1.0.0&format=image/png&strict=false&style=layerLegend&width=20&height=20&SLD=http://localhost:8080/geoserver/www/styles/layer.sld

Is it possible to generate the legend of a 2nd (or 3rd) user style in an SLD without having to copy the sld into the www/styles directory?

Kind regards,

I believe you’re misunderstanding the meaning of the “style” parameter: it is not supposed to be a UserStyle name, but the name of a Style Layer Descriptor (basically, what you write in the “Name” field when you create a new style through GeoServer’s web UI).

To my knowledge, there is no way to specify which UserStyle inside the SLD document will be used (I guess the first one is picked if multiple are present, didn’t try though). From chapter “Introduction to SLD” in GeoServer’s documentation: “A style document specifies a single named layer and a user style for it”. If I understand correctly, this sentence implies that one should not put multiple user styles in the same SLD document, but rather create multiple SLD documents containing one User Style each.

When I copy the layer.sld to the www/styles directory in the data directory and I add the SLD-parameter to the previous request, the expected legend graphic is created successfully.

wms?request=GetLegendGraphic&version=1.0.0&format=image/png&strict=false&style=layerLegend&width=20&height=20&SLD=http://localhost:8080/geoserver/www/styles/layer.sld

That’s because you’re specifying which SLD document should be used via the “SLD” parameter.

Hope this helps.

Hi Roel,
I had a quick look though the code and I see at least the intention of parsing multiple styles out of a referenced
sld file, and then a lookup by name using whatever was provided in the style parameter.
So, in theory, this should work, at least in the current version of GeoServer (I’m referring to 2.7.x and 2.6.x)

You did not say which version you’re using, if it’s a currently supported version (2.7.x, 2.6.x) can you please
open a ticket at https://osgeo-org.atlassian.net/projects/GEOS with the sld in question and the details of your
requests, if it’s older, could you try 2.6.x/2.7.x?

Cheers
Andrea

Hi Andrea,

We are using Geoserver 2.6.2.

I was probably not completely clear about what I’m trying to achieve: when you provide an SLD file in the directory www/styles of geoserver’s data directory and you use a reference tot his SLD file, it works like a charm.

But I don’t want to duplicate our SLDs in the www/styles directory, so I was wondering if it was possible to refer to the local SLD file (e.g. the SLD file in the styles directory of the workspace). And if it is, what’s the correct syntax to do so. I already tried a few (layer.sld, file:/layer.sld, file:/styles/layer.sld), but without any success.

Kind regards,

Roel

Hi Roel,
you could try and access the SLD files in your workspace via the REST
interface (remember to tune the REST security configuration in
$GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR/security/rest.properties, only admin has access to
REST services by default), like this:

wms?request=GetLegendGraphic...&SLD=http://localhost:8080/geoserver/rest/workspaces/<ws>/styles/<style>\.sld

However, have you taken into consideration my previous suggestion, i.e.
splitting your layer.sld file in two separate SLD files, containing just
one UserStyle each?

You'd end up with layer.sld containing the "layer" UserStyle, to be
used, I presume, in GetMap requests, and layerLegend.sld, containing the
"layerLegend" UserStyle, to be used in GetLegendGraphic requests.

Is there any particular reason this approach would not work for your use
case?

Hi Andrea,

We are using Geoserver 2.6.2.

I was probably not completely clear about what I’m trying to achieve:
when you provide an SLD file in the directory www/styles of
geoserver’s data directory and you use a reference tot his SLD file,
it works like a charm.

But I don’t want to duplicate our SLDs in the www/styles directory, so
I was wondering if it was possible to refer to the local SLD file
(e.g. the SLD file in the styles directory of the workspace). And if
it is, what’s the correct syntax to do so. I already tried a few
(layer.sld, file:/layer.sld, file:/styles/layer.sld), but without any
success.

Kind regards,

Roel

Hi Stefano,

Sorry for not being clear about your previous suggestion. That is exactly what we are currently using

The reason why I'm investigating this possibility of combining multiple styles in 1 SLD, is merely from a maintenance point of view rather than a functional point of view. I assume if all styles for a certain layer are in 1 SLD and one style needs some changes, it's easier not to forget to change the other styles accordingly if all styles are combned in 1 SLD (instead of 2 or more different SLDs). And because it works flawlessly if you provide a link to an (external) sld using the SLD parameter, it might probably be pretty easy to use an SLD file from my workspace.

I didn't think about the REST interface. I will definitely be investigating that one as it seems there's no other possibility to refer to a workspace-specific style. If this request would work, it would be the ideal solution:
<ws>/wms?request=GetLegendGraphic...&SLD=layer.sld
And then geoserver would retrieve the layer.sld from the workspaces/<ws>/styles directory.

Kind regards,
Roel

GeoServer configuration is designed to have one style per SLD file, if you
go out that pattern, you're pretty much on your own, it might work in some
cases, not at all in others.

We only support properly multiple styles per sld file when they come as
dynamic parameters in the request, but that has its own downside, including
that we fetch
and parse the sld file for every single request

Cheers
Andrea
