is it possible to associate a legend (typically a colorbar) to a coverage?

I'm not able with geoserver 1.5.3

Ciao Marco,
there is no capability actually in the GeoServer to specify a custom
legend through the GetLegend WMS request neither for raster nor for
features.
We actually have some unfinished work which would allow watermarking
on a per image base (hence it could be used to add a custom colobar).
As of allowing the GetLegend to use a custom GetLegend, this would not
be too hard to implement either.
