[Geoserver-users] Ghosts in the machine, errors in the log.

Greetings everyone,

I've been given the great task of setting up a GeoServer development
environment that mirrors our production environment. I think I'm pretty
close to finishing, but I'm as yet not able to extract data from Geoserver.

We're using version 2.4.6. Both Geoserver and PostgreSQL 9.2.8 are on the
same server. When I attempt to contact Geoserver through our application
(as a developer I have the source code) Geoserver is giving us the following
error in the log file:

I've Googled my heart out, but haven't found anything that would explain
this. I'm hoping one of you fine members of this forum/mailing list could
provide information on what Geoserver is trying to tell me, and what I may
have missed when setting this puppy up.

If more information is needed, I'll gladly provide it!

Thanks in advance,
Fletcher

Hi Fletcher,
those does not seem to be errors, just debug messages.
You probably have set the log level of Geoserver to verbose. At this level you will get many debugging messages, useful when you have some problem in Geoserver, to understand what is going on, but with too much detail in any other case.
You should only worry of SEVERE or WARN messages.
Is Geoserver working, apart from showing those messages in the log?

Regards,
Mauro

Hi Fletcher,
These are DEBUG level log events. That means (in theory!) they’re trivial and only there to tell a developer what’s going on. You should set the log level to be less verbose. I.e. “Default” or “Production”.

The error levels to truly worry about are ERROR and SEVERE.
WARN can also be fairly important. There was some work done recently which should clear these three levels up so items are only serious if they appear in here.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Hi Mauro,

I do indeed have the logs set to Max Verbosity. It's good news to hear
that's likely not the issue!

I'm able to access the Geoserver Admin page. The workspaces are set up,
along with the myriad other things (layers, users, roles, etc) in accordance
to how it is set up in our production environment.

When our software is attempting to get map features from Geoserver, we are
getting an error 502 (Bad Gateway) returned. It is attempting to access the
following URL:

http://<serveraddress>/geoserver/MapData/

where <serveraddress> is our Geoserver's IP address. I attempt to access
that same link via my web browser, and of course I get a 404. The problem
is, I'm such a neophyte at this I'm not certain what it's trying to reach to
correct this problem. I assumed it getting "Bad Gateway" error because of
GeoServer's errors I posted earlier. Since that's NOT the case, I'm at a
loss.

Hi Fletcher,

502 Bad Gateway could be more a problem of some proxy / firewall between and Geoserver, than a Geoserver issue.

How is access to Geoserver configured, do you have some frontend proxy (Apache or something else) at serveraddress?

Mauro
