[Geoserver-users] GSIP 26 - New GeoServer branding

Hey all, I just put together GSIP 26, http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/GSIP+26+-+New+GeoServer+Branding

At OpenGeo we have had some designers working to come up with a proposal for some new icons, and hopefully a more full 'identity' with fonts and colors. We should also have time to theme the various websites. We like the new logos and fonts, but if the community has alternate proposals we could use those, and we should still be able to spend time theming with whatever the community comes up with. But we figured it was easier to just start with a single proposal.

The various pieces can be seen at http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/New+GeoServer+Branding

And you can read the guide, for the use of it, at http://geoserver.org/download/attachments/10158143/GeoServer_BrandingGuide.pdf

If we can vote on this soon we may be able to have new sites in place in time for foss4g. Let me know on this email thread what you all think.

best regards,

Chris

What kind of feedback are you looking for here chris?
- The button that looks like a key (and thus has the text on a green background is nice and strong - is there any way to encourage its use?
- The ones whereGeoServer is on a white background do not work as well at small sizes. Iin particular the "POWERED BY" font has straight lines and sharper contrast and thus is all that grabs your eye when four feet away. The contrast between the "GeoServer" word and white is just not enough.

The logo guidelines are great; thanks for documenting the color swatches used; and importantly documenting the font used. If you see the guidelines about not using the logo over complex backgrounds; that is along the lines of what I am trying to say above; the logo was not working as well for me at small size; or against any other color than white.

The diamond world thing is pretty sweet.

hello Chris,

one suggestion based on the fact that the image/icon part of the logo
does not show our part of the world is possibly to have a pair, side by
side, showing the other side of the globe; in ascii art:

    + +
   / \ / \
  + + + GeoServer
   \ / \ /
    + +

In this week's GeoServer meeting on IRC (logs at http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/2008/09/16/IRC+Logs%2C+September+16%2C+2008) we discussed the concerns about the logo that have been brought up here, namely:
1) The color of the text 'GeoServer' in the powered-by logo does not contrast with the background strongly enough to attract the eye, and
2) The eastern hemisphere is excluded from the logo.

In the meeting we decided that (1) is not really problematic (ie, those at the meeting all agreed that there is sufficient contrast), but (2) is a valid concern. We plan to have our designer look into producing a variation on the icon with either ambiguous continents (we'll call this approach 'No Favorites') or one that includes all the continents ('Pangaea'), sticking with whichever looks best in the end. In order to provide concerned parties some time to give feedback we'll wait a couple of days before going forward with the redesign though.

Er, the current GeoServer logo http://geoserver.org/download/userResources/GEOS/logo has about the same portion of the world. And PostGIS has even less http://www.postgis.org/download/logo_suite/stock_elephant/stock_elephant_060.gif

Perhaps we could have two, that people can use as they like? I don't like the double one, and the pangaea sounds like it would be weird.

I have to say that my first thought was "why is the earth shaped like that?"
That's not bad necessarily, because the logo is certainly eye-catching.
But is there a reason that shape was chosen?
Is it supposed to remind me something else?
Maybe there could be a "reason"?
"GeoServer is as valuable as a diamond?"

hello all,

first a thank you as a GeoServer user to all the companies funding the
project and its developers and bringing the product to what it is
today.

my notes in no particular order follow:

* i'd like the logo to reflect what the product is: a worldwide,
best-of-breed, open source, OGC standards compliant, GIS Application
Server! while traditionally the GIS part is represented by a Globe,
some (real) old maps used two spheres to show the whole Earth; i.e.
the 'world-wide' aspect of the product. that's the rationale for
proposing a representation of the Earth which shows most if not all the
continents --nothing to do with politics or political correctness.

* like any real-life activity tasks have to be funded. so indeed, this
feedback process has to be limited. i already gave my feed-back and
tried to explain the motivation behind it. at the end of the day,
people use a product not because it has, or not, a 'nice' logo.
GeoServer is for sure an excellent product whatever logo it will
have
