[Geoserver-users] GWC and cascaded webservices

One very useful web service for us is being served from another organisations very slow server. If we created a cascaded web service to it, does that mean we can build up a local tile cache and thus get better performance than when served from the remote server? Have a similar issue with servers which are probably fast but located half a world away.

Yes, that should work.
There is a hiccup however depending on whether you're happy to serve
the tiles out as they are (with tile oriented protocols, or WMS hitting
exactly
the tiles available WMS-C style) or whether you want to do full WMS
requests out of them.
The latter is supported by a GWC protocol called (guess what) full wms,
(http://geowebcache.org/docs/1.5.1/services/wms.html), which in
the current stable versions of GWC does not work that great (a bit slow,
quality not too good) and it's only available in stand alone GWC
after messing a bit with its own Spring context files.

Nicola did some work to improve quality and performance of fullwms
in the dev series of GWC, which is going to be backported to the
stable series soon, but GeoServer integrated GWC does not
yet provide the fullwms service

I'm going to inquiry on geoserver devel about activating it

Cheers
Andrea
