[Geoserver-users] High Resolution Imagery in Low Resolution ImageMosaics

Hello,

I am attempting to get high resolution imagery mosaiced with lower
resolution imagery. For example, 1 GeoTIFF that is high level/low quality
world map, with 1 GeoTIFF that is very fine detail in a certain area, say
over weather formation. I know this is possible using layer groups and
seperate WMS calls, but am attempting to make this work in the ImageMosaic
plugin.

After looking through the mailing lists, the geotools user guide and the
ImageMosaicReader code itself, it does not appear as though GeoServer
supports high resolution imagery in low resolution imagery.

It appears that the resolution levels (in the .properties file) are there
for different internal overviews/pyramid levels. Can anyone confirm or deny
this?

Also, is there a GIS best practice for this type of task? Do people
typically do the layer groups, or have a composite GeoTIFF that's set to the
resolution of the highest resolution piece?

Thanks,
-Sam

Ciao Samuel,
I do not have clearly understood what you are trying to achieve, could
you please firther clarify?

As far as the ImageMosaic is concerned, it's resolution levels are
used to map the same set of image with differen resolutions.
Of course we can strecth this a bit, especially if you look at the
pyramid reader instead of the mosaic reader. You could then build a
pyramid where each level comprises a mosaic built using a set of
images (even 1 image only) which is completely different from the
other levels, assuming they still covera the same area.

Simone.

Hi Simone,

I've attached two .tgz files:
mosaicdiffres.tgz: A mosaic that contains two images of different
resolution. The mosaic is successfully created with gdaltindex. When loaded
into GeoServer, the mosaic looks incorrect.

mosaicsameres.tgz. A mosaic that contains two images of the same resolution.
The mosaic is successfully created with gdaltindex. When loaded into
GeoServer, the mosaic works properly. This is a 'control' example.

I'm trying to use GeoTools and GeoServer to make an ImageMosaic of images
that have different resolutions, and to have it display properly in
GeoServer.

Ciao Samuel,
I wanted to give a try to your test data but I am getting corrupted archives.
If you can contact me off list, I can give you some ftp details where
you can do the upload.
