[Geoserver-users] Horizontal colourful lines artifacts in JPEG tiles

Hello,

I have been trying to set up Geoserver to serve scans of old maps into a viewer. This all works quite well, but I encounter odd artefacts in the tiles sometimes.

Examples:
http://mirror.ikhoefgeen.nl/geoserver/1.jpg
http://mirror.ikhoefgeen.nl/geoserver/2.jpg
http://mirror.ikhoefgeen.nl/geoserver/3.jpg

They only occur incidentally, not consistently on the same place. The tiles are cached, but when clearing the cache for that specific layer, they are regenerated without the same artefacts.

Does anyone have an idea what is happening here?

The sources are Geotiff files with external pyramids, loaded using the geotiff data source.

I'm using:
Geoserver 2.8.2
Java 1.8.0-73 (64bit)
Windows Server 2012 R2
Tomcat 8.0
TurboJPEG has been installed and is used

Thanks in advance,
and kind regards,

~ Jelmer

I believe Simone or Nuno some days ago noticed that the JPEG encoder
selection in
GWC might not be stable across runs, this _could_ explain the issue,
especially if
GeoServer got restarted between the two tiles generations.
I've cc'ed them, they can confirm and see if this could be the cause of
what you're seeing

Cheers
Andrea
