Can Geoserver generate WMS maps in grayscale from 3-bands (RGB) geotiff layer?
Geoserver generates well color tiles from this geotiff by using the default raster SLD, but would it be possible to use the same geotiff for generating grayscale maps?
I know GDAL_CALC van transform 3-band RGB geotiff to 1-band grayscale geotiff, but I would prefer using a single 3-bands geotiff to produce both color and grayscale maps (by using different SLD or SLD rules.
Is it possible?

Out of the box you can select a single band in SLD, and it will be treated
as gray (if you don't also associate
a colormap with it, that is):
Doing value combinations across three bands is not supported out of the
box, althought it would be possible
to implement it as a new "rendering transformation"
