[Geoserver-users] how to install/upgrade a new geoserver release while retaining the old configuration?

Hi list,
i would like to know how could i upgrade an existing geoserver installation while retaining the old configuration? I get the whole installation if there is a new release. Is there a workaround which jars to update for every new release? Or do i have to save the configuration files of all datastores, user made sld’s and featureTypes-info.xml’s?

Best
Albrecht

Hi Albrecht,

Just take told data directory (<installation>/data_dir) and move it somewhere. Then set set the GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR environment variable to the new location. When you start up the new version it should continue to use your old configuration directory.

The recommended way to do this is to use the GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR parameter in web.xml to specify some directory outside of GeoServer to use as the data dir.

Hope this helps,
