I am unable to log on with the admin account to a certain GeoNetwork instance, but I do not recall ever changing the password. How can reset (or change) the admin password without logging on to the web interface?

This is the geoserver list, do you mean you have lost the geoserver password or are you posting to the wrong list?

For GeoServer (ie not GeoNetwork) you can access the password information on the file system. There is a root password you are asked to make a note of during installation, as well as an “admin” password which is used to login to the web administration system.
If you really need to kick it old school you can perform many common changes by editing the files directly and “restart” GeoServer.
