Simone et alia,
I'm not using Tomcat, but Jetty, the version that comes bundled with
Geoserver. Does that changes anything?
On other front, Ricardo Pinho (the GISVM man) tells me that I have to
install specifically the 1.0.3 version of imageio-ext, otherwise it
won't work. I'll test with his instructions and let you know.
Grazie,
Luís
Hello everyone,
Today I had two tries, both without sucess:
1 - On GISVM I tried Ricardo Pinho's instructions without results. I'm
asking for his advice again.
2 - On a fresh Ubuntu install (check the attached log), installing Sun
JDK, Geoserver and Imageio-ext by that order.
On both occasions the Raster Data Sources list remains:
ArcGrid - Arc Grid Coverage Format
GeoTIFF - Tagged Image File Format with Geographic information
Gtopo30 - Gtopo30 Coverage Format
ImageMosaic - Image mosaicking plugin
WorldImage - A raster file accompanied by a spatial data file
No MrSID.
Since so far no errors where identified in the install procedure there
must be an issue with this version of Ubuntu.
Thanks to all,
Luís

Made it!
After a night's sleep, this morning it seemed obvious this had to do
with Geoserver not finding the gdal libraries. Since I knew Geoserver
is finding correctly the java base directory and the data directory I
tried to add the recommended environment variables to the file
/etc/init.d/geoserver and it worked.
By some reason Geoserver ignores variables defined globally, but
acknowledges those set specifically for its running environment. This
may have been obvious to someone with more Linux/Ubuntu experience,
but not to me. It also think that the guide is not very explicit on
this matter.
Just one glitch though, after editing the /etc/init.d/geoserver I
couldn't restart Geoserver and had to apply the Microsoft system
restart maximum; more inexperience I believe.
Thank to all for your help,
Luís
Hello again,
I just concluded a guide to install Geoserver on Ubuntu with MrSID and
ECW support, starting with JDK down to Imageio-ext. It is writen in
portuguese, but I'd like to produce a version in English, since there
isn't anything like it on the web. Where would be the best place to
post it?
Best,
Luís

I am experiencing an issue similar to yours and can not get mrsid working.
Any guide or help you could offer me would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike.
Sorry for the very late reply. I was sick for a few days and I have just recovered this mail today.
Can you please summarize with some details the type of issue do you have with MrSID?
As an instance, you can provide us info on OS, GeoServer version, and errors/messages/behaviour you noticed.
Regards,
Daniele
