we are using an older version of GeoServer (2.1.3) and currently we try to

As you can see the text is very diffuse and we would like to get it
sharper. Our research in the GeoServer configuration and in the Internet
were not successful, I just found a setting for disabling the Antialiasing
for WMS.
You will have to upgrade GeoServer, we fixed the placement of icons around
the 2.5.x series. There are no configurations you can tune in 2.1.x to
improve that, as far as I remember at least.
