[Geoserver-users] Installing geoserver on OS X 10.5

Hello,
I am trying to install on OS X Server 10.5 which comes with Tomcat already installed. I copied the geoserver.war to /Library/Tomcat/webapps/.
I start Tomcat and navigate to http://localhost:8080/geoserver
I am sure this is the correct folder for the webapps checking the other apps and testing with a new file in the folder.

But when I navigate to geoserver URL I get this error:

type Status report

message

description The requested resource () is not available.

I checked to see that the war file was unpacked and there is now a folder “geoserver”. What am I doing wrong?

/asle

Hi Asle,

Have you installed in your system java JDK? If yes, check if the
version of JDK are you using is compatible with geoserver version you
downloaded.

Greetings Antonello.

Hi,

I don’t work with Tomcat (Glassfish instead) but don’t you have to deploy Geoserver instead of just copying the war file ?

Best regards

Hi Asle,

It would be helpful if you could attach the start up log. Probably in /Library/Tomcat/logs/catalina.out.

Hi Asle,

Best if you keep stuff on the public list so others can learn, and also help.

Looking at the log file there is a bunch of stuff in there... but one thing that pops out is:

Cannot Write to file: /Library/Tomcat/webapps/geoserver/data/services.x
ml

So it could be a permissions issue. The user that is running tomcat needs write access to the webapps/geoserver directory. If you could try checking that and restart that would be great.

If you do see another problem, can i ask you to first clear out catalog.out, restart and try again. That way we will know what exactly the relevant error is.

Thanks,

-Justin

Hmmm... not sure exactly. I usually download tomcat separately and run it manually on my mac.

- I tried to give full permissions to the files in error, no more luck

The log is still a bit hard to filter out. But one thing i do see alot of is "java.net.BindException: Address already in use<null>:8080", which means another service is probably running on port 8080. What do you see when you visit http://localhost:8080?

Regardless, you can change the port to some other like 9090. Just edit the conf/server.xml, search for 8080 and change appropriately.

Hello,
I have managed to get geoserver working fine on OS X Server 10.5. What is nice is that there is so much compiled software into the OS that I did not have to install much, i.ex. to deploy a war file was easy.

I am sorry I did not really understand why it did not work first. I placed the geoserver.war file into …/webapps and restarted TomCat. I understood I may not have had to but could deploy from the TomCat Manager. Anyway upon restart the war file was unpacked but I got an error on http://127.0.0.1/geoserver that the “…file not found…”. When I restarted TomCat again (…/bin/shutdown.sh - startup.sh) I saw in catalina.out that there were duplicate Javas running (I think). The solution was to restart the OS X Server and start TomCat (since I have not made a startupitem yet)

Now I wanted to install the standalone GeoWebCache and copied the the geowebcache.war file to webapps. I thought maybe that the old geoserver.war was not needed anymore. Then the complete geoserver folder was deleted (!!) and all my settings were gone :frowning:

So after copying back geoserver.war and geowebcahc.war , TomCat restart and just waiting (15 minutes!) I could again access http://127.0.0.1/geoserver and **http://127.0.0.1/geowebcach**e

Now my questions are:

  • Must the war files always stay in the webapps folder? Seems that if I remove the war files, the unpacked folder is deleted!

  • Will the standalone GeoWebCache interere with the builtin gwc ( http://127.0.0.1/gwc/demo)) ? Will GeoServer/GeoWebCahce configs interfere?

Thanks for any replies!

/asle

This is normal Tomcat behaviour. If you want to remove the .war file,
you can do so, but only with Tomcat stopped. If it's running it'll
interpret your action as a request to wipe out the application.

Also, in production, consider setting up an external data directory,
this makes upgrades a lot easier. More information here:
http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/2.5+GeoServer+Data+Directory

So after copying back geoserver.war and geowebcahc.war , TomCat restart and just waiting (15 minutes!) I could again access *http://127.0.0.1/geoserver* and *http://127.0.0.1/geowebcach**e*

They should not, as far as I know.

Asle, please keep the mail on the mailing list.

I just wonder in which web.xml I put the config. In geoserver or geowebcache? I found this in web.xml in ../webapps/geowebcache/WEB-INF/web.xml

The GeoServer data directory config must be in the GeoServer
WEB-INF/web.xml.
As for GWC, I don't know, but I guess someone else
might.

Cheers
