[Geoserver-users] Is CSW extension extendable?

We currently use GeoNetwork as our CSW server. It is fine, but is another server to run and maintain.

I am looking at the CSW extension, but it seems quite lightweight in that only a very few metadata fields seem to be available.

Is there a way to add more metadata fields? For example gmd:purpose?

Thanks,
Roger

Hi Roger,

That is no problem at all.

The metadata fields in the CSW extension are fully configurable with mapping files. See http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/extensions/csw/features.html#mapping-files

The mapping files present by default are merely basic examples.

Hi Niels,

Thanks for this answer. I guess what I am really asking is if it is possible to extend the list of properties in the ResourceInfo object? Then associate this with a metadata field as described.

A simple example would be to add a text property named “purpose”.

I tried adding this to the featuretype.xml file for a layer, but it just disappears the next time I save the layer information from GeoServer.

Maybe there is a way to hook this with metadataLinks[?].content?

Regards,
Roger

One cannot add top level fields, but you can add new items in the metadata
map.
You might have already have some entries in there, and can add more:

...
<metadata>

3600

10

false

true

DS_giant_polygon_giant_polygon

 </metadata>
...

The metadata map is a flat key/value pair, string key, string value, so you
cannot easily
put complex elements into it (to be precise, one could, we store the sql
views definitions
in the for example, but that requires some extra java programming to
support it)

Cheers
Andrea
