I'm trying to replace ArcGIS Server with Geoserver, call it a proof of
concept for now !
I've got a road network, as a shape file ( but I suppose it could be in any
format ), and I also have a mssql table listing what colour to colour all
the road links in. This info updates every few minutes.
In Arcmap I just do a join on the shape file with the database table, and
publish that. Is it possible to do something similar in Geoserver ?, or do I
have to make sure all my data is in the same place, i.e. moving the shape
file data into the mssql database so it appears as one big view ?
Unfortunately it is not possible, GeoServer does not do any sort of joining functionality, so to server this up through geoserver it will be the post joined (flat) version.
There is work however going on at the moment to support non-flat data sources. But that is targeted at GeoServer 2.x.

It isn't quite exactly on point for the original question, but it is certainly the same line of work.
Anyone for a Geolinking server along the brilliant lines of Geoserver? I know I'd be in for some code.
