[Geoserver-users] Is the latest GeoServer working OK on MS Windows Vista 64 bit and Sun Java 1.6.x 64 bit?

Hello,

I am going to switch to MS Windows Vista 64 bit and Sun Java 1.6.x 64 bit and I am collecting information, if my current applications will be working on this configuration. Has anyone have experiencies with the latest GeoServer on this configuration?

Thank You in advance for Your answer, Stepan

I am currently using Vista x64 with GeoServer versions 1.6.4 + 1.7.0-RC2 and have had no problems. (I am testing 1.6.5 as I write this, in fact.)

Thanks,

Not exactly the same setup, but I’ve had stability issues running Geoserver 1.6.4 on Windows Server 2003 64-bit with 32-bit JVM.

The issue is that the container/JVM running geoserver will hang at 100% CPU (not on all requests though). I haven’t seen these issues on a similar setup on Windows Server 2003 32-bit.

I switched from tomcat to jetty trying to solve the problems and it helped, but later I discovered that using -server flag on the JVM actually seem to be the main thing causing the problem. There was a Tomcat issue in 6.0.16 that might have triggered the problem more often though and also fits the issue description, something about NIO-buffer deadlock.

Oh hum, curious, since on that hardware and operating system the
virtual machine should activate the server ergonomics, and that
include -server by default:

It sounds fine, but which Java version including 32 x 64 bit are You using? I guess, that it is possible and common to run 32 bit Java on 64 bit Vista, is it not? I want to use 64 bit Java, of course. Stepan

I’m using the 32-bit JVM.

The 64-bit JVM can be used but is harder to get to work with servlet containers like Tomcat or Jetty, assuming that 64-bit versions of these are needed. It is potentially also less stable because it’s newer, and it’s currently slower according to Sun themselves for several reasons (might change with future releases). The only advantage is that larger heaps can be used (I think).

Hi. I'm using 64 bit Java, JDK version 1.6.0_07. Of course it is possible to run 32 bit Java on a 64 bit system, but I haven't personally tried that.

Thanks,
Mike
