Our server is 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 server (Intel).
What is the recommended version of Java? Now it is 1.7 64-bit.
If the recommended version is 32-bit on a 64-bit system, what versions of native JAI and IMAGEIO should I use?
I have a all-32-bit configuration on test computer (Intel Xeon) and no problems with it. The 64-bit production server needs to be booted now and then. It works ok when reading the data, but if I try to add data or change something, I get the “Sorry, timed out” or something like that errors.

That should work, but java 6 64 bits is better tested

That error message sometimes hide the real issue, which might be something
else, maybe a write permission issue.
Can you check the logs? (and make sure the folders holding the data dir are
writable for the user running GeoServer,
otherwise not even the logs will work)
Cheers

OK, thanks Andrea.
I must look at the Geoserver log and try to find a reason for the problem. I think it is not file system problem, because after a Geoserver reboot everything (adding data etc.) works fine. Our system admin set up Geoserver to work under Jetty and that is among the first things to change. I already know how to set up Tomcat, Geoserver, native JAI and IMAGEIO.
