[Geoserver-users] jp2 images will not load

I am having problems with jpeg2000 support (GeoServer 2.6x on Windows 7). I have tried to follow the instructions on: http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/data/raster/gdal.html

I installed the GDAL extension, placed the files in WEB-INF/lib directory of GeoServer

I downloaded the gdal-data.zip from http://demo.geo-solutions.it/share/github/imageio-ext/releases/1.1.X/1.1.10/native/gdal/,

-The instruction said to place these in “a proper directory”, I’m not sure what is proper. I created a C:\gdal-data folder for it.

-I then added this to the GDAL_DATA environment variable

Then I downloaded the native libraries: http://demo.geo-solutions.it/share/github/imageio-ext/releases/1.1.X/1.1.10/native/gdal/windows/

-I used the MSVC2010, but to be honest I am not sure that is the right one. But, again I extracted this to C:\msvc2010, then I put that folder in my PATH.

I rebooted the machine. When I try to add a raster store, I see an option for JP2k (Direct). So when I try to create a new store with that, the following error message appears:

Could not list layers for this store, an error occurred retrieving them: Failed to create reader from file:C:\mapserver_data\wms_raster_data\augusta_man_08\tiles\19TDJ290855.jp2 and hints null

Can anyone advise me on this?

-I have also found these messages in the GeoServer log file:

Hi Bob,
did you have install any JP2K external library? (Kakadu, MrSID, ECW?)

Within another email, Simone was suggesting to use the MrSID one which is free (in case you have no licenses for the other libraries).

This will result into having your dataset handled by a JP2MrSID coverage store which should take care of parsing georefering info through the underlying GDAL core functionalities.

Without one of these, if my memory serves me right, there is not support for embedded georeferencing parsing (such as UUID boxes, GeoJP2 Boxes or other kind of metadata) so you should also add a world file and a prj file. Can you raise the logging info to FINE and send back the log? (Also note that this won’t use GDAL at all)

Please, let me know.
Best Regards,
Daniele

Subject: [Geoserver-users] jp2 images will not load

OK, it looks like I needed the MSVC2010 versions. I installed them. But I am still getting the error message.

You also mentioned that I needed to install the external JP2 driver. Is that the drivers found here? http://demo.geo-solutions.it/share/github/imageio-ext/releases/1.1.X/1.1.10/

I did use the msi installer for MrSID and the ECW, and I see DLL’s for these in Program Files (x86)\GDAL\gdalplugins. Also, when I try to Add New Store, I see the option for JP2K (Direct), but not MrSID. Should I send the log file again?

Hi again Bob,
could you check on your debug log if you find any entry like these?

org.geotools.gce.imagemosaic.ImageMosaicFormatFactory.hasJP2GDALMRSID

or

DEBUG [gce.imagemosaic] - Unable to load GDAL JP2 MrSID Reader SPI

And check what messages are around this line? (We are looking for some messages reporting that the GDAL JP2 MrSID driver has been properly loaded or not)

I also think that if you have configured your dataset without GDAL drivers being properly configured, you have to reconfigure it after the drivers have been properly set.

Please, let us know.

Regards,
Daniele

Hi again Bob,

if you have the GDAL extension on your GeoServer webapps your log should contain either:

… it.geosolutions.imageio.gdalframework.GDALUtilities loadGDAL
INFO: GDAL Native Library loaded (version: 1.9.2)

OR

… it.geosolutions.imageio.gdalframework.GDALUtilities loadGDAL
WARNING: Failed to load the GDAL native libs. This is not a problem unless you need to use the GDAL plugins: they won’t be enabled.

Could you please check that?

Regards,
Daniele

Hi Daniele,

I looked in the log file, I did not find either of those entries. I searched using two different text editors.

Regards,
Daniele

Hi Bob,
posting it again with less quotes to avoid “waiting for moderator’s approval due to message too long”

Hi Bob,
did you configure the GDAL_DRIVER_PATH to point to Program Files (x86)\GDAL\gdalplugins ?

Cheers,
Daniele

Hi Bob,
could you please provide me the list of jars available on your geoserver WEB-INF/lib folder?

Hello Daniele,

That is interesting. I did not find either message in my log. So does that mean I don’t have the GDAL extensions enabled? How do I change that?

Hi again Bob,

if you have the GDAL extension on your GeoServer webapps your log should contain either:

… it.geosolutions.imageio.gdalframework.GDALUtilities loadGDAL
INFO: GDAL Native Library loaded (version: 1.9.2)

OR

… it.geosolutions.imageio.gdalframework.GDALUtilities loadGDAL
WARNING: Failed to load the GDAL native libs. This is not a problem unless you need to use the GDAL plugins: they won’t be enabled.

Could you please check that?

Regards,
Daniele

Hi Daniele,

I looked in the log file, I did not find either of those entries. I searched using two different text editors.

Regards,
Daniele

Hi Bob,
posting it again with less quotes to avoid “waiting for moderator’s approval due to message too long”

Hi Bob,
did you configure the GDAL_DRIVER_PATH to point to Program Files (x86)\GDAL\gdalplugins ?

Cheers,
Daniele

Hi Bob,

please keep the mailing list in the loop.

Can you also please share your stderrout log?
Is the one containing info about whether GDAL has been properly loaded or not.

I have no feedbacks about the URL conversion DEBUG message but I think is a simple DEBUG message reported by some callback mechanism which is not reporting anything critical (moreover it isn’t related to the GDAL loading issue)

Hoping some other developers can chime in to provide more info on that if needed.

Cheers,
Daniele

Hello Daniele,

Sorry I did not reply sooner, I was out of the office for the past few days. I have added the GDAL DLL’s to the Path variable. I still get errors, but I see this at the beginning of the stack trace. This seems to indicate that GeoSever is not able to convert a URL? Here is the beginning of the error message, I have attached the complete message.

Thank you again,

Bob

Hi Bob,

ah ok. I was thinking you was using Tomcat.

You are using Jetty instead.

from your stderrout file, I see that:

Jan 15, 2015 11:36:12 AM it.geosolutions.imageio.gdalframework.GDALUtilities loadGDAL
WARNING: Failed to load the GDAL native libs. This is not a problem unless you need to use the GDAL plugins: they won’t be enabled.
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no gdaljni in java.library.path

Which states that the GDAL libraries aren’t successfully loaded/found.

I’m not familiar with Jetty so I don’t know if it needs any specific configuration or settings.

Anyway, at this point I would try adding GDAL_DRIVER_PATH (as suggested before) to the System environment variables (I was thinking you did this in some initialization script, but I don’t know how things work with Jetty). As well as adding the GDAL DLLs folder to the main PATH environment variable of the system.

Please, let me know.

Daniele

Hi Bob,

please keep the mailing list in the loop.

Cheers,
Daniele

Hi Bob,
at this point I’m not sure about why your system is still not loading the GDAL libraries.

I’ll have to schedule some spare time to try to replicate your issue on my machine and provide you feedbacks or suggestions.

Before that, last question: Are you running GeoServer as a service?

In that case you should check this section of the documentation:

Please, let me know.

Hi Bob,

I have checked again some of your logs.

It seems from your logs that you are using the OpenGeo suite. I’m not too familiar with that suite so I would suggest to directly ask Boundless for more info on that in case the suggestions provided on 1 still don’t work.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bob,

please keep the mailing list in the loop.

Cheers,
Daniele

Hi Bob,

I have checked again some of your logs.

It seems from your logs that you are using the OpenGeo suite. I’m not too familiar with that suite so I would suggest to directly ask Boundless for more info on that in case the suggestions provided on 1 still don’t work.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Daniele

Hi Daniele,

I am running GeoServer through the Jetty service. So I don’t have GeoServer running as a standalone service, but the Jetty is the service.

Many thanks for your help with this,

Hi Bob,
at this point I’m not sure about why your system is still not loading the GDAL libraries.

I’ll have to schedule some spare time to try to replicate your issue on my machine and provide you feedbacks or suggestions.

Before that, last question: Are you running GeoServer as a service?

In that case you should check this section of the documentation:
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/data/raster/gdal.html#note-on-running-geoserver-as-a-service-on-windows

Please, let me know.
Best Regards,
Daniele
