[Geoserver-users] Just getting started and totally lost

I have downloaded and installed geoserver. When I run the startup script I can point IE to http:/localhost:8080/geoserver and it goes through it’s compilation stage and then shows the welcome page.

At this point, I simply want to provide a WMS MapRequest to get a map of the world. However, the only layers are U.S. states and some B.C. roads. How to I get a background map of the world?

Thanks!
JAB

Hello Jeff:

You need to download and install the WCS branch of geoserver for raster support.
You can download the latest and greatest SVN from here:
https://svn.codehaus.org/geoserver/branches/wcs-branch

Well, you don't need a background map to have raster support if it's just a map of the outlines of countries. You need the raster support if you want a picture of the world. You just need a shapefile of the world if you want a background of the world.

GeoServer just ships with some sample requests. If you want a WMS Request to get a map of the world, then you need to set up GeoServer's data with a map of the world. There are several sources of free world data. We have instructions on how to download and use VMAP0 with geoserver at: http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDOC/Loading+VMAP0+data

When Jeff said "background map" I interpreted that as him wanting to
see a background raster. Sorry if I misunderstood.
