Hmmm, i am guessing it is still a problem with templates somehow. Its
just now when a template dies intsead of totally failing when a template
error occurs it just skips the description and moves on. So i imagine
that is what is happening.
Ping me on IRC and we will hammer this one out. Also, do you think a
message like "template rendering failed" would be useful instead of just
no description at all?

pointing 1.5.1 at my old GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR?
Hmmm, this is a good point. That could be the problem. Do you have only
templates in your data directory, under featureTypes directory for
subway_stations in this case?
