[Geoserver-users] KML Placemark Templates tutorial

Hi all,
first of all thank you to all geoserver developer and users. It's a very
useful and powerfull software.

Today I have read KML Placemark Templates tutorial:
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDOC/KML+Placemark+Templates

I have created the "Hello world" kmlPlacemarkDescription.ftl file, but I
have always the same template for the states layer.
Why am I not able to load my customized template??

Thank you,

a

What version of GeoServer are you working with? I don't think templates have made their way in to any releases, which is why we haven't promoted it. So you'd need to be working off a nightly build.

Hmmm... Though we probably should be putting warnings in the documentation to that effect.

Uagh! Right, I forgot it was so new.
Updated the tutorial page to warn people accordingly.
Anyways, you can use a nightly build to the templates, grab it here:

Hi Chris,
I'm using the war file downloaded from
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/geoserver/geoserver-1.5.0-war.zip.
I'm using TomCAT 5.5 with windows 2003 server.

Thank you

Yeah, it won't work. You need a 1.5.1 snapshot, 1.5.0 does not have
template capabilities.
You can grab a nightly here:

Hi all,
I have unistalled the old geoserver file, then I have extracted the 1.5.1
snapshot war file in webapps folder, I have restarted TOMCAT and now I have
:
"type Status report
message /geoserver/
description The requested resource (/geoserver/) is not available."

I know it's a generic error but why I have it. I can see geoserver listed in
Tomcat Web Application Manager, but when I click on it I have the above
error.

What do you thin about?

cheers,

An error probably occurred during startup. Do the tomcat logs (
catalina.out ) report any problems during startup?

Hi all,
I have downloaded the nighty build
(http://geo.openplans.org/nightly/1.5.x/geoserver-1.5.x-051607-war.zip).
Which is the difference between geoserver-051407-war.zip file and
geoserver-1.5.x-051607-war.zip one? These files are in
http://geo.openplans.org/nightly/1.5.x/ folder.

Is there a guide for nightly build installation? What I must do to upgrade
from the 1.5 stable war file to the nightly build one?

I have uninstalled completely the stable build.
I have installed the nightly one and now I can access geoserver application.
I have created this file: "\Tomcat
5.5\webapps\geoserver\data\featureTypes\tasmania_cities\kmlPlacemarkDescription.ftl"
("Hello world" inside it). Restart geoserver.
Then I have opened
"http://myserver:8000/geoserver/wms/kml_reflect?layers=tasmania_cities", and
I have opened the kml file. I see always the same standard template.

What do you think about?

Thank you,

andrea

Nothing special, if you were using the WARs, stop the container, remove
the old WAR and its unpacked version, eventually clean up the work directory (tomcat has one) and restart.

I just checked and can reproduce. Oh man... I thought the template functionality was completely backported from trunk, but it turns
out we have only the engine, but not the KML part.
Justin, can you backport it to 1.5.x? Btw, documentation that's not
relevant to the current stable series should stay in GEOSDEV to
avoid confusing users, or at least, state in the docs from which
version of Geoserver the functionality is available.

Cheers
Andrea

Hi aaime,
thank you. How is it possible to be informed about kml template functions
re-integration?

I have read about updating war procedures. I imagine I must delete all
except data directory (if it's in webapp/geoserver folder). Am I right?

Which is the difference between geoserver-051407-war.zip file and
geoserver-1.5.x-051607-war.zip one? These files are in

Well I am in the midst of a bunch of kml changes on trunk, I will try to

Hi Andy,

Sorry I did not. I went to do the backport and realized that there are
some other "experimental" changes related to kml still in the works.
Separating them for backport will be kind of a pain. I am hoping to wrap
them up in teh next couple of days and then backport then.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Is it impossible for you to use a 1.6
nightly? Templates are fully functional there.
