I am researching various map server applications and I have been trying to find one out there showing the options and requirements of the most popular ones out there. I have had no luck so far. I would think that there should be some whitepaper or academic paper covering this. Any help would be great…

No one has that I know of, but John Roberts, cced, is working on a thesis doing just what you're looking for, and is going to develop a matrix comparing the features, that I hope to help on and get in to OSGeo.org
