[Geoserver-users] MismatchedDimensionException: 3 dimension error on new layer load

G'Day all,
We're trying to get a layer from the QLD Spatial Catalogue loaded up to our GeoServer and hit a snag that looks like this:
----
org.opengis.geometry.MismatchedDimensionException: Argument "GDA94" has 3 dimensions, while 2 was expected.
Argument "GDA94" has 3 dimensions, while 2 was expected.
----
The QLD authoritative metadata for the layer is here: http://bit.ly/1LbDuh9
There is a reference in the context of Oracle from Jody Garnett here:
http://bit.ly/1DibVun
and another more recent one from Sirko Schroeder here:
http://sourceforge.net/p/geoserver/mailman/message/30134777/

However, I can't see how/if this has been addressed or what to do next to rectify?
We are on GeoServer 2.5 (Build 18-Mar-2014 16:08) and the layer in question is being served as a flat shp file. The native SRS is shown as UNKNOWN and the forced SRS is EPSG:4938

The Native Bounding Box was computed from data, but [Compute from Native Bounds] failed to populate the bbox fields. I copied the Native values in by hand. We are also using an SLD from QGIS for the style.

Any suggestions or clues gratefully received!

Hi John,
nothing comes to mind, I guess some more detailed analyis would be needed.
Just a guess, the 3D support is not that old, and improved over time,
it may be that you just need to upgrade GeoServer to a more recent version (2.5.x is
not supported anymore, 2.6.x has less than a couple of months left and only one bug
fix release, I’d suggest you try out a 2.7.x)

Cheers
Andrea

G’Day Andrea,

Thanks so much for the fast response.

The “full stack trace” eludes me now that so many different options have been experimented with, but here’s how it has actually turned out:

  1. The official metadata record at QLD Spatial declares that the SRS is EPSG:4938

  2. If you copy/paste EPSG:4938 into the GeoServer>Declared SRS> [Find] field, you get no results.

  3. If you shorten it up to 4938, a single entry (EPSG:GDA94) is returned. I simply selected this value and then got the 3 Dimension error.

  4. Eventually I clicked on the (very helpful!) link in GeoServer right next to the Declared SRS field and noted that the 4938 version of EPSG:GDA94 has 3 axes (x,y,z)

  5. I re-ran the SRS search, this time just using the term “gda”…which of course showed me a bunch of different GDA flavours. I pecked through the list to find a nice simple one with only an x,y axis (EPSG:4283) and this one displays fine.

So…it mostly boils down to my own lack of understanding around SRS declarations. The GeoServer error was a decent clue, but I didn’t know what to do with it.

And there remains the mystery of why the QLD Spatial Catalogue’s declared SRS does not match cleanly with an available SRS in GeoServer.

Hope that’s a useful re-telling of the story, and thanks again for the interest.

Kind regards,

JB
