[Geoserver-users] Mobile GIS App Inquiry

We're planning an enterprise GIS solution of the following:

UDIG - Desktop GIS
PostGIS - Relational Database
GeoServer - to manage/distribute WFS - Transactions
Mapguide OS - web viewer

??? - mobile GIS for field collection

Any recommendations for a GPS data collection app running on Window CE? We
have a Trimble GeoXT and I don't believe UDIG will run well on this GPS
unit. We do have ArcPAD 7.1, but we're not sure if GeoServer will recognize
data transactions. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

GvSIG is a promising project but not ready yet http://www.gvsig.gva.es/index.php?id=1995&L=2
Roadmap tells what is to come in rather near future http://www.gvsig.gva.es/index.php?id=1814&L=2

Perhaps it would be a perfect time to join the project and co-operate for adding WFS-T support. I have tried the 0.2 version on Nomad PDA and what is implemented seems to work pretty well.

uDig (more specifically, Eclipse) is, as you say, very unlikely to work on a handheld device. I don't really have a good answer, but I'll throw out a few ideas:

Not sure how good the browsers for Windows CE are, but that GPS device supports bluetooth and IR, so you could potentially use an OpenLayers WFS-T client and have the edits go straight through GeoServer into Postgis. The question then is whether the GPS coordinates are accessible to JavaScript in the browser.

OpenGeo is definitely looking for cost effective solutions in this domain, Whit has been testing the iPhone a bit http://docs.opengeo.org/geospiel/2008/10/21/touch-and-openlayers/

Looks like http://moss4g.telascience.org/ set out to do exactly what you need, but it seems rather dead unfortunately.
