[Geoserver-users] netCDF and WCS

Hi All,

I’d like to create a coverage store that reads a group of netCDF files as input data. Is this possible? I see various references to this in list messages, but cannot find any official docs that describe how to implement such a thing.

Ciao Roger,
there is an unsupported netCDF plugin inside geotools which was known
(I believe to work with GeoServer.
There some work that we are doing on in a branch for netCDF-CF but I
do not think that would be helpful for you in the short term.

Just out of curiosity, saying I have a nunch of netcdf files is a bit
of a generic statement being netcdf so generic, what type of netcdf do
you have? Do they follow any standard?

Salut Simone,

Thanks for the info. At the moment I am trying to use a sample file from the Unidata site, http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/examples/tos_O1_2001-2002.nc. It is a CF convention file of gridded data about sea temperatures. I would like to setup a WCS service that can query this file for a specific layer in it named “tos”. I haven’t worked much with either netCDF or WCS, so this is proving to be interesting. :wink:

Regarding the geotools netCDF plugin that you mention below, can you tell me how I could try using it to accomplish what I’m trying to do? I will be working from a fresh install of GeoServer, so I can install whatever is needed, I’m just not exactly sure what that is, or how to implement it.

Hello Roger:

Do you have your own netcdf files that you want to server through
Geoserver? Like Simone mentioned, there are a number of known netcdf
format conventions that are currently recognized by the java netcdf
library.

If you can point us to a sample netcdf file, one that you want to use
in your end result, we can try to display it in Geoserver and then to
get you going with using the netcdf plugin too.
