Hi folks,
I have downloaded Geoserver 1.5.4 for experimentation purposes
Please bare with me as this is very new to me.
1) What other additional item do I need to download regarding Geoserver.
Ie., maven, eclipse ( I'm no programmer and this is what brought GeoServer
to my attention - the hopeful lack of programming required )
2) Building actual maps for the web. Is Mapbuilder or Openlayers required
here? or can I simply build going through the data config menu's provided
and actually build and publish my maps out?

Well other than GeoServer itself you just need java jdk to run it. And
that is it if you just want to be a "user". If you want to be a
developer you will need maven. And likely an IDE. Most developers on the
project use eclipse.

GeoServer ships with openlayers and uses it as a nice way to demo layers
that have been configured. it is not required, you can serve up maps
through straight WMS, but if you are building web applications that
require a mapping component, then it is definitley the way to go.
Let us know if you have any more questions.
