[Geoserver-users] New to Geoserver- Need help with the Installation

Please keep in mind our user community communication options here

It is difficult for many of our members (including myself) to respond directly to personal emails:
a) there are far too many to keep up with
b) answering on the user list allows folks to learn form the work and experimentation of others

The footer of each geoserver-users email has a presentation and discussion on this topic.

Please make sure you read the following two resources before posting to this list:

- Earning your support instead of buying it, but Ian Turton: http://www.ianturton.com/talks/foss4g.html#/

- The GeoServer user list posting guidelines: http://geoserver.org/comm/userlist-guidelines.html

If you want to request a feature or an improvement, also see this: https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/wiki/Successfully-requesting-and-integrating-new-features-and-improvements-in-GeoServer

For this specific issue the user list has been actively discussing alternatives to the windows installer (which was lost last year due to vandalism on our build server infrastructure). If you or your employer have resources to help us access a windows build server this capability can be restored for everyone.

Sharon:

The windows installer is not being produced currently (we had some vandalism on our build infrastructure and we have not had sufficient resources to replace).

Personally I recommend:

  • Production: We recommend installing tomcat on windows (docs), and then installing the GeoServer WAR into tomcat (docs). This is a great approach that makes geoserver available as a windows service.

  • Testing: If you just want to try out geoserver the “bin” download can be used (docs)

  • In both cases you will need Java 8 installed (https://adoptopenjdk.net)

Can I ask where you found mention of a windows installer? As you pointed out it is no longer available on our website.

I know that many Microsoft organizations require a windows installer to meet their managed systems policies; best advice is to build an installer by hand (docs).

Thanks, I’ll check out the available options.

Sharon
