geoserver newbie question, can we query raster data (geoTiff, MrSid) using CQL? and is there a beginners guide to CQL?

You’d need WCS (Web Coverage Service).
There’s not mch in the documentation on it though. (i.e. http://docs.geoserver.org/1.7.x/user/services/wcs/index.html - are all blank) But this search might help:

I know you can query Rasters but I don’t think CQL can do it - it’s for WFS (maybe WMS too) that I can tell. I believe you need to crate XML filter for Raster queries, but that’s not an area I know anything about so can’t help.

There aren’t any comprehensive guides that I could find when I was looking last week, but the geoserver docs have a few basic tutorials:
