[Geoserver-users] Non Georeferenced Image Tile Server

Hi all,

I was looking into using Geoserver as a generic image tile server but looks like Geoserver doesn’t actually have that capability. The new support I thought was coming is only for ImageCollections which are randomly served?

I was hoping to use GetCapabilities to load up my list of layers and be able to treat the “dumb image” as a WMS Layer.

Does anyone know of an easy to set up image tiling server that I could be using?

I have images as png and as jpeg2000.

Thanks,

Ronak Patel

Hi,

I was wondering if someone knows of a good generic image server for non-georeferenced Images (dumb PNGs and JPEG2000).

Thanks,

Ronak Patel

Hi,

When it comes to JPEG2000 it is worth having a try with Kakadu demo applications from http://www.kakadusoftware.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=26&Itemid=22

Demos can only be used for non-commercial use without buying Kakadu license but they are of so high quality that it is good to test them for having something to compare other products with. Demos include both JPIP server and client (kdu_server and kdu_show). Prepare some test images with PCRL or RPCL progression order and have a try. Alternatively you can test with these public domain satellite images. They may well suit for JPIP but I have not tried them myself.

Sorry,

I noticed too late that those BitTorrents are ECW files so they are not for JPIP. I am prepering some new JPEG2000 mosaics but they are not ready yet.

Right now there is whole lot of JPEG2000 orthoimages with attribution-only license downloadable through this link

Those JPEG2000 images are created so that they suit well to be used as source for JPIP servers

Sounds good Rahkonen,

Looks like there’s enough support on the iPhone to render a JPIP stream as well.

I’ll have to play around with this this weekend and see what I can scrap together.

I imagine a JPIP stream to the iPhone will be faster than WMS, TMS HTTP Calls??

Hi,

Do not imagine anything about JPEG2000 without trying yourself. Theoretically it is a wonderful image format but obviously so complicated that there are only a handful of SDKs which are really good and fast. Even they may have difficulties with JPEG2000 images which are not created with their own preferred parameters. For example the images from the National Land Survey of Finland suit well for Kakadu and ECW JPEG2000 but not at all well for MrSID JPEG2000 based drivers and OpenJPEG cannot open them at all. JPEG2000 code streams can be reorganized without loosing anything about the quality so existing images can be converted to suit some certain SDK but once again, there are not many good tools for that. It is also hard to find information about most suitable parameters for each SDK. It also depends on the size and type of source images. It is best to keep your stop watch available, play as much as you can and measure everything.

It may be that JPIP streams have less variation but I do not know really.

Is that dead? Or is it being infused into Geoserver? Will we finally be able to use that with a release version of Geoserver?
Will images be published as standard WMS layers?

The plugin has still not reached supported status, it would take some more work to get it there.
To get the other plugin to support unreferenced images some little work should be done, but I believe
it should not be too much, like getting the “world image” reader work even without the .wld files

I guess it depends on wheter you want to actually publish an image collection behind a single layer
name, or want to publish each image as a separate layer.
Both would require some extra work in any case, but the work would be different

Andrea,

Are there any alternatives you can recommend then?
One option is to use JPEG2000 and JPIP and perhaps:

Are there any other choices?

Andrea,

Are there any alternatives you can recommend then?

Not really, the only recommendation I have would be to work to move up either the
image collection or the world image readers to a state that is usable for you.
Haven’t played or looked for other pure image servers sof far.

Cheers
Andrea

Hi Andrea,

Since this is an important capability for my application, I’d like to see if I can work on that plugin and improve on it.

Can you please show me where the plugin is in the source code?

Thanks

Ronak Patel

Sure. The coverage reader plugins are in GeoTools, here is the list of those you might need to look at/modify:
http://svn.osgeo.org/geotools/trunk/modules/unsupported/imagecollection/
http://svn.osgeo.org/geotools/trunk/modules/plugin/image/

It seems like the: http://repo.opengeo.org/org/geotools/gt-main/8-SNAPSHOT/gt-main-8-SNAPSHOT.jar file is corrupted?

They do compile, I have just built it

Just downloaded and checked the file, it’s not corrupted.

You may be better off by compiling GeoTools from the root, to have maven build only the modules you need,
you can use the following:

mvn clean install -pl modules/unsupported/imagecollection -am

Cheers
