[Geoserver-users] OSX doesn't load GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR

In Mac OSX Leopard I’ve defined a GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR Environment Variable pointing to a different directory then the default one inside the GeoServer 1.7.2 application package.
It won’t load on starting GeoServer 1.7.2. Instead, after starting the server through the menu, line 1 of the GeoServer screen still reads:

  • GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR: /Applications/GeoServer 1.7.2.app/Contents/Resources/Java/data_dir

Changing the web.xml file insite WEB-INF as a second method documented in the manual pages didn’t solve this.

Is support for the DATA_DIR under Mac OSX already in place or planned for a future release?
Regards, Egbert

Hi Egbert,

Yeah, this is more or less a known issue. I have created a jira ticket for it:

http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-2618

I was however to get it work by following instructions here:

http://mactip.blogspot.com/2004/04/setting-environment-variables.html

And then a system restart.

Using Tomcat, I've had good results supplying a value for that variable in a Context config element.
