[Geoserver-users] Performance issue - setting up image takes long time

Hi

I wonder what Geoserver makes during “setting up image” during GetMap call to WMS-endpoint. See logfile snippet:

INFO | jvm 1 | 2015/03/31 14:09:58 | 31 mar 14:09:58 DEBUG [org.geoserver.wms.map] - setting up 4000x3250 image

INFO | jvm 1 | 2015/03/31 14:10:06 | 31 mar 14:10:06 ERROR [org.geotools.map] - Call MapContent dispose() to prevent memory leaks

INFO | jvm 1 | 2015/03/31 14:10:09 | 31 mar 14:10:09 INFO [org.geoserver.wms] –

It always takes long time (5-10 seconds) to do this when requesting large image sizes. I’ve tried to manipulate the java memory heap, but it don’t seem to have any effect on the performance.

Do anyone have any ideas?

Ah, the time you have between those two log lines is:
* setting up the image
* read the data
* paint the image
* encode the result in png

So... it's everything, not just allocation of the image, which is actually
just a split second.

In a image such large png encoding is likely going to dominate the overall
request time (just guessing here, you did not say which image
format you're using).

Cheers

Thanks for the answer!

Yes, its PNG

It’s a cascaded WMS consuming a PNG image itself. The GetMap request to the underlying WMS is logged at the next step.
