[Geoserver-users] PNG Transparency

Hello list.

When I overlay my WMS layers with png format, it looks fine in firefox with
transparencies, but IE shows a white background image.

This is related to geoserver?

Looking at maps.google.com I can see that Hybrid map ovarlay pngs in both IE
and Firefox

Are you using a specific client such as MapBuilder or Open Layers? Or just rendering the images yourself?

As already mentioned IE does not support transparency in PNGs... there is some hacks to do that but in a web gus can be tricky.

What Google does in the Hybrid mode is pretty smart. If it detects Firefox it uses PNGs to overlay de roads on the imagery. In Internet Explorer, Google Maps uses VML to draw polylines.

In IE 7 this will be solved (if it is ever released).

So it is not a problem of Geoserver but Internet Explorer.

Thank you. I will try to test your suggestions with Google Maps and put some
notes at the docs.
