[Geoserver-users] Poor quality of imageMosaic 1-bit rasters

Hi

I have a problem with setting appropriate settings for layer, based on ImageMosaic with 1-bit monochrome rasters, that will give me on output WMS raster with good quality.

I attach screenshots of original raster in irfanview and in geoserver’s openlayer preview.

Default conf for this layer interpolation method was “nearest neighborhood” and this screenshots is from that conf. On bilinear it looks much worse.

Any one can help ?

My conf:

Geoserver 2.5.4

Centos 5

Tomcat 6.0.43

Java 1.6.45

Ciao Lukasz,
I would do what follows:

reprocess them as 8 bits performing a color expansion
add overview with bilinear or bicubic resampling

If you don’t want to do that, you may want to try and ask the imagemosaic to expand the palette to RGB but without proper overviews quality will suffer anyway.

Hi Simone

reprocessing to 8bit - no way (other app is using this rasters and thats way they have to be 1bit)

I tried to add overview to that one sample raster and add it to new datastore in Geoserver and preview in WMS - quality is still poor.

but wat do you mean saying “you may want to try and ask the imagemosaic to expand the palette to RGB” ?

Hi

One more thing about this overviews. I tried to do that today again with this command:

gdaladdo -r average -ro lisow3.tif 2 4 8 16 32 64

and now in Geoserver I got this errors for previewing layer in full view of raster and zooming in. Error gone (and raster appears) in scales 1:366 , 1:183 and smaller.
So it looks like this overviews could no be load ? What am I doing wrong ?

I would do what follows:

reprocess them as 8 bits performing a color expansion

add overview with bilinear or bicubic resampling

If you don’t want to do that, you may want to try and ask the imagemosaic to expand the palette to RGB but without proper overviews quality will suffer anyway.

just providing a reply related to the IndexOutOfBoundsException.

Did you create overviews for all TIFFs files or did you forgot to generate overviews/generated a different number for some of them?

I’m asking this because it seems the mosaic is trying to load a missing sub-image (= imageIndex out of bounds! error) of the underlying TIFF. This may happen when it is unable to find some overview level and the “heterogeneous” flag in the mosaic properties file is set to false.

and now in Geoserver I got this errors for previewing layer in full view of raster and zooming in. Error gone (and raster appears) in scales 1:366 , 1:183 and smaller.
So it looks like this overviews could no be load ? What am I doing wrong ?

I made this test only on one raster in directory and for that raster made overviews.

I check properties file in that directory and as you write “heterogeneous” flag was set on false. I changed it to “true” and error gone.

But quality still is poor

I didn’t get an answer from Simone for yesterday question:
– but what do you mean saying “you may want to try and ask the imagemosaic to expand the palette to RGB” ?

maybe you can tell me how to expand palette to RGB on imagemosaic, because I don’t know what he means about that.

just providing a reply related to the IndexOutOfBoundsException.

Did you create overviews for all TIFFs files or did you forgot to generate overviews/generated a different number for some of them?

I’m asking this because it seems the mosaic is trying to load a missing sub-image (= imageIndex out of bounds! error) of the underlying TIFF. This may happen when it is unable to find some overview level and the “heterogeneous” flag in the mosaic properties file is set to false.

Please, let us know.

I would do what follows:

reprocess them as 8 bits performing a color expansion

add overview with bilinear or bicubic resampling

If you don’t want to do that, you may want to try and ask the imagemosaic to expand the palette to RGB but without proper overviews quality will suffer anyway.

You should add an "ExpandToRGB = true" property to your mosaic properties
file after the mosaic has been created and reload it.
(Newest version of GeoTools/GeoServer allow to specify that property in the
indexer so that it can be used at creation time).

just providing a reply related to the IndexOutOfBoundsException.

Did you create overviews for all TIFFs files or did you forgot to
generate overviews/generated a different number for some of them?
I'm asking this because it seems the mosaic is trying to load a missing
sub-image (= imageIndex out of bounds! error) of the underlying TIFF. This
may happen when it is unable to find some overview level and the
"heterogeneous" flag in the mosaic properties file is set to false.

Please, let us know.

- reprocess them as 8 bits performing a color expansion
- add overview with bilinear or bicubic resampling

If you don't want to do that, you may want to try and ask the
imagemosaic to expand the palette to RGB but without proper overviews
quality will suffer anyway.

neighborhood" and this screenshots is from that conf. On bilinear it looks
