Hi,
As far as I know external overviews which you created with “gdaladdo –ro” can’t be used with image mosaics. See for example https://www.mail-archive.com/geoserver-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg20259.html . Issue seems to appear in the mailing lists about once per year.

One more thing about this overviews. I tried to do that today again with this command:
gdaladdo -r average -ro lisow3.tif 2 4 8 16 32 64
and now in Geoserver I got this errors for previewing layer in full view of raster and zooming in. Error gone (and raster appears) in scales 1:366 , 1:183 and smaller.
So it looks like this overviews could no be load ? What am I doing wrong ?

I tried to add overview to that one sample raster and add it to new datastore in Geoserver and preview in WMS - quality is still poor.

I would do what follows:
-
reprocess them as 8 bits performing a color expansion
-
add overview with bilinear or bicubic resampling
If you don’t want to do that, you may want to try and ask the imagemosaic to expand the palette to RGB but without proper overviews quality will suffer anyway.

I have a problem with setting appropriate settings for layer, based on ImageMosaic with 1-bit monochrome rasters, that will give me on output WMS raster with good quality.
I attach screenshots of original raster in irfanview and in geoserver’s openlayer preview.
Default conf for this layer interpolation method was “nearest neighborhood” and this screenshots is from that conf. On bilinear it looks much worse.
