[Geoserver-users] Posting questions on StackOverflow

Should we start encouraging folks to post all GeoServer questions onto StackOverflow instead of this mailing list?

I suspect there are advantages doing so.

Well in my opinion posting on stackoverflow you can probably reach a larger audience.
But on this list your post will be read by many advanced users plus most core developers.
I would prefer if the list does not disappear.

Cheers

Subversion Kills Productivity. Get off Subversion & Make the Move to Perforce.
With Perforce, you get hassle-free workflows. Merge that actually works.
Faster operations. Version large binaries. Built-in WAN optimization and the
freedom to use Git, Perforce or both. Make the move to Perforce.

There are currently 1500+ questions tagged GeoServer on GIS.SE https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/geoserver so feel free to join them.

A lot of the same developers and users that hang out here answer questions over there too

The advantage of SE (I think) is that Google indexes it faster/better so it’s easier to find good answers.

Personally I just assume that StackExchange is for people who don’t want to go to the trouble of signing up to the mailing list. That’s fine, I ask Python questions there rather than on a Python list/forum for instance. But I ask GeoServer questions here and QGIS ones on the qgis list.

StackExchange is good as a low barrier for entry, but most people who do GeoServer stuff and have lots of questions will probably end up gravitating here in the longer term I suspect.
