Dave,
many thanks for the quick fix!
Unfortunately I am not an expert with SVN. How can I get the fix prior to the next release, as I need it rather urgent?
Many thanks in advance,
Uli.

SVN is quite easy. What you will have to do it download and install it and 'checkout' Geoserver. This will get you the source code and the most recent jar file that you want swap out with your old one.
There is a sorta-tutorial up here http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOS/GeoserverAndEclipse , it's not very good. I will try to get the page in better shape today and include a straight svn totorial (I believe there was a good one but I can't find it).
Here are some quick and dirty steps on getting the new source code and a new jar using SVN.
Windows:
1) Download Tortise SVN: http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/download.html
Get the windows installer
2) Run the installer
3) Open up windows explorer
4) Make a new folder somewhere called Geoserver
5) Go into that folder and right-click. You right-click menu will now have a few extra things attached to it (hopefully).
6) Select 'SVN Checkout'
7) Enter this URL: https://svn.codehaus.org/geoserver/trunk/geoserver
8) Hit OK
9) When it is done downloading, look in the lib directory. If you want to generate a jar file yourself, you will have to run Ant
Other OS's
1) Download the Subversion client: http://subversion.tigris.org/project_packages.html
2) Install it and set it up
3) Make a new Geoserver directory
4) Navigate into that directory and type in:
svn co https://svn.codehaus.org/geoserver/trunk/geoserver
hit return.
5) When it is done downloading, look in the lib directory. If you want to generate a jar file yourself, you will have to run Ant
Here is the handy subversion handbook: http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.1/svn-book.html
Hope it helps. If you want, I can e-mail you my recent geoserver.jar file, but if you learn how to use SVN you can grab updates for yourself whenever you want.
Good luck
