[Geoserver-users] PubCookie vs. ESRI vs. GeoServer

Just wondering if anyone out there has tried to use PubCookie authentication with ESRI desktop software (or any other client, for that matter) to protect restricted GeoServer resources?

We at the University of Virginia have been handed PubCookie to work with by our information technology support department, and while I'd much rather not deal with it and instead use a modern and featureful authentication mechanism, it's what we've been given. We're contemplating serving out some license-restricted resources and I'd much rather not use a blunt method like IP restriction on a separate GeoServer instance to do that. It's not clear to me that it's even possible to present cookie-based authentication from a client like ESRI desktop software, but we're asking ESRI about it. I though I'd ask on this list too, in case there's a solution from the GeoServer side of things that I haven't seen. Thanks for any ideas!

As far as I know the only commonly supported authentication method
in desktop applications is HTTP Basic Authentication, and that's
what the GeoServer authentication supports nowadays.

And oh, btw, I'll be very curious to find out how this ends up,
what solutions you'll end up choosing and why
