We're developing a similar application, and we chose OpenLayers as the front-end library for the mapping part (dysplaying maps, panning/zooming, etc.). Maybe Mapbuilder has a broader range of features, like support (complete? Limited?) for the Web Map Context standard, and other things. But OpenLayers has a very cool mapping interface, with tiled display and a truly ajax-enabled interface, like Google Maps.
Only my 2 cents.
Cheers,
Fabio

Oggetto: [Geoserver-users] Rich Web client support
Hi all,
I am desinging (and hopefully implement) an Atlas portal.
I wil use postgis and Geoserver as my central framework but I am not sure about the final implementation of the portal.
I would like the portal support functionalities:
WMS queries
WFS queries
WCS queries
dynamic add/remove layers
zoom in/out,
pan,
distance measurement
etc
download capabilities (shapefile, kml, etc)
From a draft search I think my options narrowed to:
Mapbuilder, Mapbender, (Ka-Map?), iGeoPortal
Does anyone has a suggestion or a comment, (even a commercial solution )?
PS : I know this question is irelevant with Geoserver, but I will need the experience of the experts ..
Thnx
George

My recommendation right now is OpenLayers as well. MapBuilder is actually working to harmonize some of their stuff with OpenLayers, and many of its best features are making their way in to openlayers - like Vector editing on top of WFS.
I don't think anything out there will fully meet all your needs, but OpenLayers gives you a really strong basis to build new features on top of. Like it's faster to code new features when you need them.
And I think it's definitely fine to ask such questions on this list, indeed it's the kind of advice most users want since GeoServer pretty much just works, but needs a front end to take advantage of it. Specific questions on getting a front end working should obviously go to their list, but impressions of which is best for the job is appropriate here.
