I installed tomcat 5.5.9 and am running geoserver in it.
1. if you get an error about supporting image/png - then you need to
install JAI.

2. I'm unable to reproduce this error. How did you cause it? I noticed
you where using tomcat 5.0.30 - you might want to consider upgrading to
a later version.
java.lang.IllegalStateException: getOutputStream() has already been
called for this response
org.apache.coyote.tomcat5.CoyoteResponse.getWriter(CoyoteResponse.java:600)
org.apache.coyote.tomcat5.CoyoteResponseFacade.getWriter(CoyoteResponseFacade.java:164)
org.vfny.geoserver.servlets.AbstractService.send(AbstractService.java:666)
