[Geoserver-users] Recording web view statistics and unique visitors through Geoserver

Hello,

I was wondering whether there was any utility in GeoServer to monitor the
web traffic it gets. That is, number of hits a WMS or WFS gets, and the
number of unique visitors?

I know everything is recorded to the log - is there any other way to get
this information?

Regards

Hi Michael,
It really depends what you want.

If you want generic web-analytics you can use a regular log-analysis tool - it'll tell you how many users, how long they used the site, etc etc. The standard stuff. There are plenty of them.

If you want the interesting, GeoServer/OGC specific stuff like WFS, WMS, WMTS,TMS usage etc, you'll need specialist software.
GeoServer has the monitoring extension - http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/extensions/monitoring/index.html - but personally I find it very limited.

I've created a stand-alone application (Python) that does GeoServer specific log analysis and I'm looking to release an early version of it in the next few months; ideally a basic version that's FOSS, and likely some commercial plugins that do the really interesting stuff (not figured out the details) that are also free to non-commercial types. It's aimed squarely at answering the questions you've asked - how many people do WFS/WMS requests, what layers are they asking for, what's the most common projection, etc etc.

Cheers,
Jonathan
