[Geoserver-users] Res: GISVM - Free GIS Virtual Machine Pre-release

Thank you Andrea for your kind words!

I have been amazed about how useful a VM can be for my computer working tasks since
the first time I discovered the Virtualization, a few years ago. I just can't
live without it! It eliminates so many excises!

And I must agree with you, GISVM is a great solution for a teaching scenario. Because
it can easily be deployed for equal Workstation environments, and focused
directly on the teaching objectives, if you know what I mean?!

For instance, I believe it would be very useful on the FOSS4G 2008 Hands-on
WORKSHOPS!!!!

Is the VM used in other environments as well?

Yes, it can be used in other environments!
I suppose Windows/Mac GIS users will be obviously beneficed in using GISVM,
because it will be a painless start into the Linux world.
But Linux users will also be pleased because of the VM aspect benefits...

wow, the "video" shows a lot of topp:states in action

I have tried to put the maximum of applications in a <1GB file image!
That’s why I couldn't put any data on it, and used topp:states (WMS/WFS) to
show how the other Desktop Application can interoperably work with each other! On
the next version I hope to load some World data into Postgresql-PostGIS
and leave some project examples for the first time-users...

Cheers,
Ricardo Pinho

PS
“What is excise?”
(In About face : Alan Cooper - http://www.google.com/search?q=alan+cooper+about+face )

“When we decide to drive to the Office, we must open the garage door, get in, start the motor, back out, and close the garage door before we even begin the forward motion that will take us to our destination. … Excise is the extra work that satisfies the needs of our tools or those of outside agents as we try to achieve our objectives. The distinction is sometimes hard to seebecause we get so used to the excise being part of our tasks. …”

Dear all,

A pre-release version of "GIS Virtual Machine" is available at : www.gisvm.com
GISVM is intended to be a full-feature GIS Workstation based exclusively on free GIS software, including Geoserver.

Thanks for integrating GeoServer in the VM... wow, the "video" shows
a lot of topp:states in action
The VM seems to be very useful for teaching in an enviroment that is
mostly Windows based (to avoid scaring away people and providing a
easy and safe way to try out the applications, which are btw already
configured and ready to be used). Is the VM used in other enviroments
as well?

Cheers
Andrea
