[Geoserver-users] Running Geoserver + ECW GDAL Plugin

Hi, I'm trying run Gdal + Ecw plugins for Geoserver 1.7.3 in Linux. I've already compiled gdal libs (libgdaljni.so, libgdal.so, libosrjni.so, libogrjni.so and libgdalconst.jni ), following the Imageio Extension Setup Guide and the Ecw libs (Image Compression SDK Source Code ) and copied all of them on the system library path.

After running Geoserver, Tomcat's log shows this warning

"Native library load failed.java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /usr/local/lib/libgdaljni.so: /usr/local/lib/libgdaljni.so: invalid ELF header (Possible cause: endianness mismatch)"

and no one ECW format appears at the Coverage Plugins List.

Any help or advice, please?

Thanks

Hi,

We're go on with the same problem after checking the link
(ImageIO-ext+GDAL+extensions), as you advicsed me. We're working now
with Geoserver 1.7.3, tomcat 5.25, JDK 1.5.0.16 and
linux32-gdal-mrsid-ecw-1.0.1 plugin.

All seem to be well configured: libraries on $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
(/usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib), the imageio plugin's jar on
/geoserver/WEB-INF/lib and the $GDAL_DATA.

Tomcat's log seems to be normal:

Hi,
from your reply I suppose the new imageio-ext plugins aren’t available on Welcome → Config → WCS → CoveragePlugins yet.
Can you post the output of the “ls” command from WEB-INF/lib as well as the output of “ls -ls” from /usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib/i386?

Note that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH should link against the location where the *.so files have been copied.
Usually, as suggested in the README file, libs are placed on (In your case) /usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib/i386.
Therefore, I suggest to you to update the LD_LIBRARY_PATH with this path.

Let me know.

Regards,
Daniele

Hi,

We’re go on with the same problem after checking the link

with Geoserver 1.7.3, tomcat 5.25, JDK 1.5.0.16 and
linux32-gdal-mrsid-ecw-1.0.1 plugin.

All seem to be well configured: libraries on $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
(/usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib), the imageio plugin’s jar on
/geoserver/WEB-INF/lib and the $GDAL_DATA.

Tomcat’s log seems to be normal:

Hi,
that jar should be the same of “imageio-ext-gdal-1.0.1.jar” available
with
the geoserver gdal extension download.
It contains the bindings to call the C++ code available in the JNI
DLLs,
from JAVA.

Daniele

Hi, sorry, I could not write before.

I’m following the GeoSolutions Image I/O Setup Guide 1. You’re
right, It
speaks of GDAL 1.4.4 instead of GDAL 1.6 2. I’ll test it.

I’ve another point I’d like to check. I’m not sure about what I have
to do
with the gdal.jar build after Swig Java bindings (Section 3.7.3.1,
“Generating JAVA Bindings”, of the guide). Is it neccessary if I
work with
the ImageIO-ext GDAL extension?

Hi,
Geoserver 1.7.3 leverages on imageio-ext project 1.0.1 version which
actually uses GDAL 1.4.4 whilst you are trying to build your version
using
1.6.0.

Do you have already checked this link 1?
It referes to the imageio-ext download section which contains
ready-to-use
Linux binaries, 2.
Let me know.

Daniele

Hi,
from your reply I suppose the new imageio-ext plugins aren't available
on
Welcome -> Config -> WCS -> CoveragePlugins yet.
Can you post the output of the "ls" command from WEB-INF/lib as well as
the
output of "ls -ls" from /usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib/i386?

Note that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH should link against the location where
the
*.so files have been copied.
Usually, as suggested in the README file, libs are placed on (In your
case)
/usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib/i386.
Therefore, I suggest to you to update the LD_LIBRARY_PATH with this
path.

Let me know.

Regards,
Daniele

Hi,

with Geoserver 1.7.3, tomcat 5.25, JDK 1.5.0.16 and
linux32-gdal-mrsid-ecw-1.0.1 plugin.

All seem to be well configured: libraries on $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
(/usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib), the imageio plugin's jar on
/geoserver/WEB-INF/lib and the $GDAL_DATA.

Tomcat's log seems to be normal:

Hi,
that jar should be the same of "imageio-ext-gdal-1.0.1.jar"

available

with
the geoserver gdal extension download.
It contains the bindings to call the C++ code available in the JNI
DLLs,
from JAVA.

Daniele

Hi again,
it seems you don’t have the gt-imageio-ext-gdal-2.5.4 jar on your web-inf/lib folder.
Please download again the imageio-ext geoserver extension from the geoserver download page:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/geoserver/geoserver-1.7.3-gdal-plugin.zip
Then, copy the jars on web-inf/lib.
Let me know.

Daniele

Hi,
from your reply I suppose the new imageio-ext plugins aren’t available
on
Welcome → Config → WCS → CoveragePlugins yet.
Can you post the output of the “ls” command from WEB-INF/lib as well as
the
output of “ls -ls” from /usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib/i386?

Note that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH should link against the location where
the
*.so files have been copied.
Usually, as suggested in the README file, libs are placed on (In your
case)
/usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib/i386.
Therefore, I suggest to you to update the LD_LIBRARY_PATH with this
path.

Let me know.

Regards,
Daniele

Hi,
that jar should be the same of “imageio-ext-gdal-1.0.1.jar”
available
with
the geoserver gdal extension download.
It contains the bindings to call the C++ code available in the JNI
DLLs,
from JAVA.

Daniele

I’m following the GeoSolutions Image I/O Setup Guide 1. You’re

I’ve another point I’d like to check. I’m not sure about what I
have
to do
with the gdal.jar build after Swig Java bindings (Section 3.7.3.1,
“Generating JAVA Bindings”, of the guide). Is it neccessary if I
work with
the ImageIO-ext GDAL extension?

Hi,
Geoserver 1.7.3 leverages on imageio-ext project 1.0.1 version
which
actually uses GDAL 1.4.4 whilst you are trying to build your
version
using
1.6.0.

Do you have already checked this link 1?
It referes to the imageio-ext download section which contains
ready-to-use
Linux binaries, 2.
Let me know.

Daniele

At last we can see these formats on Gesoerver 1.7.3!
I must have deleted it after one of our tests. Also, we've had problems
with the definition of some environment vars on Fedora. But finally it
runs.

I'm going to check now image pyramid plugin and ECWs.

Thanks you very much Daniele and sorry for my confusion.

Hi again,
it seems you don't have the gt-imageio-ext-gdal-2.5.4 jar on your
web-inf/lib folder.
Please download again the imageio-ext geoserver extension from the
geoserver
download page:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/geoserver/geoserver-1.7.3-gdal-plugin.zip

Then, copy the jars on web-inf/lib.
Let me know.

Hi,
from your reply I suppose the new imageio-ext plugins aren't

available

on
Welcome -> Config -> WCS -> CoveragePlugins yet.
Can you post the output of the "ls" command from WEB-INF/lib as well

as

the
output of "ls -ls" from /usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib/i386?

Note that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH should link against the location where
the
*.so files have been copied.
Usually, as suggested in the README file, libs are placed on (In

your

case)
/usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib/i386.
Therefore, I suggest to you to update the LD_LIBRARY_PATH with this
path.

Let me know.

Regards,
Daniele

I must have deleted it after one of our tests. Also, we’ve had problems

runs.

I’m going to check now image pyramid plugin and ECWs.

Cool. I assume you have obtained from ERDAS a license to use ECW on the server.

Thanks you very much Daniele and sorry for my confusion.

Don’t worry about this. It’s not a problem.

Daniele

Hi again,
it seems you don’t have the gt-imageio-ext-gdal-2.5.4 jar on your
web-inf/lib folder.
Please download again the imageio-ext geoserver extension from the
geoserver
download page:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/geoserver/geoserver-1.7.3-gdal-plugin.zip

Then, copy the jars on web-inf/lib.
Let me know.

Regards,
Daniele

Hi,
from your reply I suppose the new imageio-ext plugins aren’t
available
on
Welcome → Config → WCS → CoveragePlugins yet.
Can you post the output of the “ls” command from WEB-INF/lib as well
as
the
output of “ls -ls” from /usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib/i386?

Note that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH should link against the location where
the
*.so files have been copied.
Usually, as suggested in the README file, libs are placed on (In
your
case)
/usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_16/jre/lib/i386.
Therefore, I suggest to you to update the LD_LIBRARY_PATH with this
path.

Let me know.

Regards,
Daniele

Hi,
that jar should be the same of “imageio-ext-gdal-1.0.1.jar”
available
with
the geoserver gdal extension download.
It contains the binding
s to call the C++ code available in the JNI
DLLs,
from JAVA.

Daniele

I’ve another point I’d like to check. I’m not sure about what I

Hi,
Geoserver 1.7.3 leverages on imageio-ext project 1.0.1 version
which
actually uses GDAL 1.4.4 whilst you are trying to build your
version
using
1.6.0.

Do you have already checked this link 1?
It referes to the imageio-ext download section which contains
ready-to-use
Linux binaries, 2.
Let me know.

Daniele

I must have deleted it after one of our tests. Also, we've had problems

I'm going to check now image pyramid plugin and ECWs.

Cool. I assume you have obtained from ERDAS a license to use ECW on the
server.

Hi,

I captured the following posting from MapServer user list. Do you know if ECW is now allowed or not as input format without licence fee?

"I just happened to be looking at the ERDAS web site the other day, and noticed that there's been a relaese of the ECW SDK since the ER Mapper/ERDAS merger. What caught my eye was changes to the SDK licensing mentioned in the release notes:

"Product enhancements, including:

    * No more restrictions on the distribution of 'Server Software' under the GPL-style Public Use License Agreement

Commercial Use.

Subject to all other terms of this Agreement, You are hereby granted a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use the ECW/JP2 CODEC SDK to create, use and distribute END APPLICATIONS that DECODE for COMMERCIAL USES."

Also supporting this interpretation is the seperate royalty schedule for Commercial use, it only lists ENCODING as a use where license fees are due.

Cheers,

Antti

good question,
I have read that as well but I have not had time yet to check the
license. Anyone else?

Simone.

Ciao Antonio,
once you get to the point of checking the ECW license, it would be
great if you could get back to us with your ideas.
