Geoserver contains some sample data:
geoserver/web/src/main/webapp/data/data/shapefiles/states.shp
For the states example, where did the data originate from, what time
period is it ?
If I wanted to re-create it with newer data, how would I go about it ?
-Thanks

Frankly, no idea... anyways, that shapefile has been around for years,
at least 5, so it's quite old.

I guess the easiest way would be that you opened the DBF to Excel
or OpenOffice Calc and updated the data directly. Just make sure the
DBF can still be read after you save, so check it from time to time
when you're editing it.
Cheers

It's US Census data and I'd guess it's 1990 data as I'm fairly sure
James and I started using it before 2000 data was available.
