[Geoserver-users] serving DEM files using Geoserver

Greetings,
I’m using Geoserver 2.8.1.
I have downloaded DEM package from http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/dem/squareCellGrid/search site
Which option should I select from Raster Data Sources to publish it as a WMS layer?

or is there a plugin for DEM? In extensions page I haven’t seen an item related with DEM

Hi,
there is not such a thing as a DEM format, DEM refers to the nature of the data,
digital elevation model, not to how it’s encoded in a file format (it’s like saying
“I have a satellite image” without saying if it’s geotiff, jpeg2000, ecw, and so on).

Looking at a few a random DEMs in that collection, it seems they are in
ESRI Arc ASCII format:
http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/dem/squareCellGrid/download/393

If that’s the case, GeoServer should be able to open them as ASCII ArcGrid,
you can try it out, but I would not recommend using that format for serving the file, it’s a text
format without overviews, so it’s bound to be slower than other alternatives.
If you want to serve it out with good performance, I’d recommend to use gdal_translate
and gdaladdo to turn it into a geotiff with overviews instead

Cheers
Andrea

First things first. Thanks for all the previous answers, especially to Anrea…
While playing with WFS settings, I noticed that In Services->WFS page
there is a combo with a name Workspace. It’s empty. What’s the use of this combo?

There is a service level option I can select basic or transactional support for WFS.
How can I tune WFS settings according to layer/store?
For example X layer should have basic WFS support. Y,Z layers should have transactional support.

Thanks in advance
Bulent
