I am not completely new to GeoServer, but about to start a project where
ISO19115 metadata should be served by GeoServer. I have seen that a
respective module - ISO19115 as a data store - is under development but in
the meantime I see two alternatives: PostGIS or GML.
Both solutions require intermediate steps to parse ISO19115 into one of the
supported data stores. One would be XSLT or scripting to generate GML from
ISO19115, the other would be a postgreSQL/postGIS database which holds the
metadata and the geometries. To decide which way to go I would like to get
some feedback on two aspects: 1. performance / stability of postGIS data
store vs. GML data store. 2. Set-up and maintenance of the system.
Has anybody worked in a similar situation and would offer some feed back?
We're strongly invested in it here at the University of Virginia Library. It's a great product with a large community, great standards implementation, and it's easy to customize and build on. I highly recommend it for metadata work.

The process supplying the material is OAI-PMH. The main purpose of the
system is to syndicate metadata on distributed data sets. The feature
part is just one aspect. And offering WMS, WFS etc. just comes as a
nice-to-have feature.
I already know that I will have to transform the 19115 into something
that has stable support from GeoServer. So it is fine with me to set
up a PostGIS solution that reads in ISO19115 and becomes the data
store. I just wonder if there is a better solution in terms of set-up
and maintenance requirements and performance.
Thanks

I'm a bit confused. ISO19115 is a standard for metadata. Certainly it allows
for the inclusion of features, etc., but they would be expressed in GML. Is
there some reason you can't extract the feature data and utilize it in
PostGIS or some other more amenable form? What is the purpose of storing
feature data in a metadata form? What kind of process is supplying this
material?

Sorry, I my first sentence is misleading. Of course I want to serve
WMS. WFS, KML and the like. But the data I want to show come in
ISO19115.

If I understand the question correctly, you want to serve ISO19115 out
to clients.
I've got some extremely simple feedback: GeoNetwork.
