[Geoserver-users] Serving tiled heatmaps

Hi,

Is it possible to render transformation (in my case, heatmaps) and serve them tiled through WMS? I’m using the example from http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/styling/sld-extensions/rendering-transform.html, but down the page it says:

Rendering transformations may not work correctly in tiled mode, unless they >have been specifically written to accomodate it.

I tried with Leaflet.js and had to use a custom layer*[0] to make it render without glitches, although it still doesn’t render the like the original image.

I wish I could just use the default Leaflet WMS API*[1], but apparently it’s not possible. Does anyone know if it’s possible somehow? The ntoe says “unless it has been specifically written to accomodate it”, what does it mean exactly?

Some rendering transformations are built to be tiled, some are not.
The heatmap one is definitely not, the algorithm currently implemented
makes no sense when tiled (as it changes
the output taking into account everything in the requested bounding box,
and if you slice it, you change
the input data).

If what you want to depict is not point density, but some representation of
one of their attributes,
you might want to try the Barnes surface interpolation... while I have no
experience with it,
by a quick look at the code, it seems it might tile correctly (at least,
there seems to be some
effort in that direction in the code, no idea if it works)

The process has never been documented in GeoServer docs by its original
author (Martin Davis),
but there is something lying around in the net:

If this is not what you're looking for, rendering transformations are
pluggable, so you can

Are there any known issues using Apache Tomcat and the War version of GeoServer with Windows Server 2012 ?

I will be installing 2.7.1.1 as 2.7.2 is missing from the sourceforge.net server

There are no obvious threads jumping out that things were going horribly wrong.

One thing, do not upgrade Tomcat to version 8, it was made incompatible with apps using JAI ImageIO.
Still have to figure out exactly what happened before we open a bug report against Tomcat

Had some success it all seemed to work fine until I added this to web.xml like I normally do:-

GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR

C:\GeoData

Then Tomcat can’t start geoserver

I suspect its something to do with permissions on the folder, so I mirrored what was on the 2008 R2 box but no luck

By looking at the logs, it kind of seems GeoServer is missing the
plugin providing the store you were using.

If it’s the case of Oracle, recent versions of GeoServer stopped shipping
the JDBC driver because of redistribution restrictions, did you add
the JDBC driver manually in the WEB-INF/lib manually?

I copied the ojdbc7.jar and gt-jdbc-oracle-13.1.jar into the lib folder ( I also tried it with ojdbc6.jar)

I moved my data from c:\geodata into the default folder and its still failing

I also tried 64 bit versions of the jre and apache tomcat again with no luck

I did search the log for ERROR rather than warn and found this :-

By looking at the logs, it kind of seems GeoServer is missing the

plugin providing the store you were using.

If it’s the case of Oracle, recent versions of GeoServer stopped shipping

the JDBC driver because of redistribution restrictions, did you add

the JDBC driver manually in the WEB-INF/lib manually?

One thing, do not upgrade Tomcat to version 8, it was made incompatible with apps using JAI ImageIO.

Still have to figure out exactly what happened before we open a bug report against Tomcat

I copied my data into the internal folder to try remove that as a possible reason

I’ve been using Tomcat 8.15 to 8.21 for 6 months with no issues on windows server 2008 – my backup server is currently running on 8.21 with the same data with no problems

I can try Tomcat 7 if that is what will work with windows server 2012

Interesting, we have had some reports of Tomcat 8 not working, and indeed
it's not working on my computer either:

But it's Tomcat 8.0.24, so maybe it's a recent regression? Don't think the
issue would be platform dependent (I'm on Linux)

So now I don't see any other error in your logs, so what is not working?
Did you check if the stores/layers that are not working are by any chance
not enabled anymore?

We have done a bit more investigation here and it seems the issue may be postgis related

The postgis server log is reporting :-

2015-07-29 10:13:41 BST LOG could not receive data from client: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

I have our server guys trying to find why its happening

I’ve been using Tomcat 8.15 to 8.21 for 6 months with no issues on windows server 2008 – my backup server is currently running on 8.21 with the same data with no problems

I can try Tomcat 7 if that is what will work with windows server 2012

Regarding generating the actual layer, do you think it’d be better to pre-generate it using tools like GMT, GRASS or GDAL and then just tile the image using WMS or dynamically generate it by applying a SLD style to the vector data?

Some rendering transformations are built to be tiled, some are not.
The heatmap one is definitely not, the algorithm currently implemented makes no sense when tiled (as it changes
the output taking into account everything in the requested bounding box, and if you slice it, you change
the input data).

If what you want to depict is not point density, but some representation of one of their attributes,
you might want to try the Barnes surface interpolation… while I have no experience with it,
by a quick look at the code, it seems it might tile correctly (at least, there seems to be some
effort in that direction in the code, no idea if it works)

The process has never been documented in GeoServer docs by its original author (Martin Davis),
but there is something lying around in the net:

If you cannot get GeoServer to do what you want, and cannot develop your
own transformation either,
yes, that's a way.
It will become a problem to keep it up to date with your data, if the data
changes often. But if it does not change at all, you do it once by hand and
you're done.
