I'm running 1.3.0 and its going great. Geoserver is going to really help us distribute data more efficiently.
I noticed that it is capable of outputting Shapefiles in the FAQ. So, I tried this string,
http://localhost:8080/geoserver/wfs?request=getfeature&service=wfs&version=1.0.0&typename=states&outputformat=SHAPE
and got this back:
<ServiceException>
output format: SHAPE not supported by geoserver
</ServiceException>
any ideas?
On a side note, do you have to have root access to the server to install Geoserver? For example, if I had linux shared hosting account, is there a way to install Geoserver at the user end?

You need to change the output format parameter to outputformat=SHAPE-ZIP
With regards to installing under Linux, we have a user account with a Tomcat installation and we deploy the Geoserver WAR file there. So in our case no root access is needed.
