my version, but I wanted to get this request/idea in before you close it
down.
what about a stupid simple SLD editor. I already create SLD's by uploading
a file, which geoserver then stores somewhere on disk (and, unless its
fixed, keeps me from re-uploading a file of the same name).
why not just have a big textarea when you view one of your styles that lets
you edit the raw XML of the SLD _inside_ geoserver?

I like the idea. Perhaps a little validate button as well. .This is the approach udig took with their SLD editor. It was nice for an advanced option for this familiar with SLD.
Not sure if this kind of feature can get into 1.5.0 as we are pretty deep into release candidates. But sounds like a pretty good feature for perhaps 1.5.1?

We did consider this already, but it seemed the new UI
was ready to be done in january/february, so we did not care.
Wrong forecast, as usual. Let's make it for 1.5.1, as making it good
it's a little tricky (we need to handle creation as well, and validation too, with decent error messages).
There are quite a bit of jira issues associated with this, the most
appropriate seems to be:
